Performance and Analysis

The Faculty Research Unit (FRU) provides support and advice to the Faculty of Medicine Dentistry and Health Sciences through research and information analysis and benchmarking activities, Within the framework of the University of Melbourne’s goals, key strategies and academic organisational structures, especially as they relate to research and research management.

The unit frequently undertakes projects which analyse aspects of the Faculty’s research performance, by acquiring, analysing and managing research data and information as well as advising and undertaking analysis (including bibliometric analysis) for key benchmarking, reporting and other submissions by the faculty. This is primarily evidenced in the provision of briefings, discussion papers and data on research performance issues and trends within the Faculty and the sector to senior Faculty and University staff and committees as requested.

The FRU is actively involved in providing strategic advice and support to faculty academic staff regarding ERA, HERDC and other external reporting requirements.

We also provide advice and support to ensure the faculty’s publications collection is maximised and accurate, liaising with Melbourne Research to support Faculty publication coordinators in the annual publications collection (February).

The Unit maintains knowledge of available benchmarking measures and databases to ensure best practice analytical reporting and policy development in line with national and international trends that impact upon research management and performance measurement.

As part of this brief, the unit conducts analysis of the Faculty’s research performance against other universities and research institutions using appropriate benchmarking tools and databases to provide a comparative baseline and strategic recommendations as required. The unit also periodically analyses the faculty’s research output against selected international, national and university performance indicators.

The FRU is open to and actively involved in collaborations with other University units in developing opportunities to promote, integrate and communicate the faculty’s research using existing and new systems.
