Heidelberg is approximately 10 kilometres from Melbourne CBD, in the north eastern suburbs. University of Melbourne researchers are based at the Austin Hospital, a large tertiary teaching hospital which has recently undergone major redevelopment and was re-opened with new facilities in 2005.

The Austin Hospital is conveniently located across the road from Heidelberg train station. Heidelberg train station is on the Hurstbridge line, and is approximately 20 minutes from the city. Timetables can be found at the Metlink website.
